Several year’s ago I read a blog about “Avoiding the Passion Pop Gulf” from Seth Godin and it recently jumped out again with reports of Instagram users leaving the platform since the pop culture giant giant bought them.

Of course things will change, hopefully for the better, but the reason a small percentage of users will leave Instagram has more to do with what Seth was pointing towards with the “Passion vs Pop” culture differences.

The question I have is this What percentage of Instagram users fall in the passion crowd and what percentage mix with Facebooks Pop crowd? What do you think?

Keeping up with appearances even when you don’t feel like it. It happens. It’s the norm to be “fine” when you’re not. It’s expected and almost required. But if you stay there; ungrateful, conflicted and bitter and try to fake a smile or put on a show you will eventually wind up in an extremely dangerous place.

We were not meant to fake it. We were never meant to walk dead. It goes against everything we are about. You even feel the twist internally when you try and do it. Two scriptures come to mind when I think about this topic. One is towards all of us and the other is pointed directly at religious leaders who claim to know Jesus.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” http://bible.us/John15.5.NIV

Don’t pretend like you can get away with this kind of living. You were never meant to bear the full weight of this fallen world. So why try it alone?

Just a quick exercise on a custom vector icon. Wanted to apply some of the new tools in Adobe Illustrator. Infinite detail is possible but here is a 20-minute sketch for you to download. So this is a first attempt. Need to add more detail and tweak for a bit more realism. Also available via Gumroad if you feel like throwing in $1. Thanks for that.

Superbowl Sunday

One of the largest attended and most watched televised events is happening this weekend — the NFL Super Bowl! It’s game time and everyone is excited. It’s about a competition to find out who is the best of the best each year. Personally, I wish we were watching the Houston Texans against the Packers or Steeler’s but there’s always next year!!!

So here’s my question ‘What can the church learn from the superbowl?’ Besides the emphasis of excellence, atmosphere, energy and so on… the NFL has built up an incredible following and fan base around this one huge weekend — it’s goal and purpose to determine the best team of the season and put on an incredible show for all the fans.

So let me state the obvious – we ‘the Church’ are not here to compete with one another and certainly not here to put on a great show. We are the body of Christ and are called to work together to accomplish one goal to share the good news of Jesus Christ, reach people for him and equip them to reach others who do not yet know what He did for all of us. This was God’s original vision for us ‘The Church’.

Pro football players understand they are a part of something bigger than themselves. Let’s employ every method and means to give people a glimpse of the vision of the Church that Jesus talked about when He was with us on this earth — an incredible team of people who love God, love each other and love life.

Recently drove to Santa Fe, New Mexico with the family. It was absolutely beautiful. I think I may start painting again soon. Until then digital will have to do. Woke up one morning about 3:45am and could not go back to sleep. I decided to drive into the mountains, hike a bit in the snow and snap some shots of the sunrise over the peaks. It was incredible and I’ll never forget that morning. Inspired — a quick typography sketch with Adobe Garamond, photo from Santa Fe mountain basin and a piece of paper.

Cy-Fair Fire Department Outside Home — Houston, Texas

We just found out that my wife’s grandmother in Houston, Texas lost her home and pet to a fire today, Saturday January 14, 2012. Please pray for them as they are devastated and unsure what to do. They unfortunately did not have fire insurance.

A space heater ignited and started the fire about 12noon on Saturday.

I was also asked by friends to post the link for donations to help the family find temporary and long-term accommodations. 100% goes to help Myra’s Grandmother and Uncle. Send a donation.
